'Shitty' Coffee Anyone??

Hey everyone!!

It's been awhile since my last post, been rather busy at NUS FASS Arts Camp & enjoyed a week long trip to Hong Kong. Details on the trip will be in my next post :)

This evening, however, I had the privilege of being invited to my aunt's place in Kovan for a home cooked Western spread!

We had the awesome, beef ribs, pork chops with apple sauce, hot dogs with cheese. The unorthodox but still awesome, grilled capsicum, grilled eggplant, not to mention beer butt chicken [Recipe] & last but not least, roti prata topped with mozzarella cheese & deer salami.

Beer Butt Chicken. Looks ridiculous, but honestly, the beer adds a whole load of flavour!!

It was a mouthwatering, tantalizing gourmet menu that my cousins & I thoroughly enjoyed. What was most worth a mention however, was what we had at the end of our meals, which was of course "shitty coffee."

Well, that's what my uncle calls it at least. It's actual name, "Civet Coffee" or "Kopi Luwak".

Where is it from?

Kopi Luwak is produced mainly on the islands of Sumatra, Java, Bali and Sulawesi in the Indonesian Archipelago. In this case, my aunt & uncle bought it during a recent weekend trip to Medan.

What is it??

Coffee made from the beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by the Asian Palm Civet and other related civets, then passed through its digestive tract, which in lay man terms, simply means, goes thru its digestive system, and comes out from the other end.

Amazingly, the coffee beans are defecated in the civet's intestines but keep their shape. After gathering, thorough washing, sun drying, light roasting and brewing, these beans yield an aromatic coffee with much less bitterness, widely noted as the most expensive coffee in the world.

Initially, it was a gross prospect!! But like my aunt said, if she didn't mention it, I would have drank it anyway, thinking it was a less bitter, nicer smelling, sweeter, most innocent brand of high grade coffee!! Well, it turned out pretty good!! For those who like a cuppa. Haha. I beseech you to try some. Look at me, I am still alive! & I hope I will be tomorrow morning ... You will have to stay tuned to find out :p

Btw, we somehow got into a debate on the past tense of "shit". Is it "shat" or "shitted". That one, is still up for discussion.

Batman Tee by Balmain. Keepin' it edgy, as usual, with the (bullet?) holes on the iconic Batman logo tee.

Wonder Woman dress by Sonia Rykiel. Not too hot for this though, I can't imagine a grown woman in it. Sonia Rykiel should have gone GaGa and done a leotard.

It was a rainy day & a Thursday

Today, I was not abruptly jolted awake by my phone alarm that heralds the start of yet another day. Another day in front of a computer screen, surrounded by the four walls known as The Office.

Today, I woke up at 11 (teehee), and then I left for school to help out with some orientation preparations. It was a rainy day, so I thought it was the perfect moment to wear my personal pair of Rainy Days & Mondays out. (Well, in this case it was a Thursday) Paired with a bling bling beanie, a black burn-out top & denim shorts.

Elegant and fuss-free chic, glams you up instantly even when you feel like being super casual. The little tinkling sounds the earring bits made, on top of the pitter-patter of rain against my umbrella, was magical.

10 Facebook Friends You Should Delete

1. The Ex

You got dumped few months ago, and now he or she is apparently having the time of her life.

The Ex is very happy with new-found love, or has found a new bunch of suitors and is posting updates about ever romantic date of hot encounter on Facebook.

Worse, there are plenty of pictures to accompany the status updates, and you can't help but flip through the photo galleries and stare at what was once yours.

Delete. And move on already.

2. The Stalker

The Digital age is all about instant communication though online interaction, and these friends are exactly that - except for the fact that they're a little too extreme.

Messages will usually start with "Hey how are you doing?" and should you be foolish enough to reply, a barrage of notes will follow.

"Hey, want to meet sometime?"

"What are you up to lately?"

"Seen that latest movie? Haha, I like it, do you?"

"Hey why aren't you answering me?"

"Haven't heard from you since 2 days ago, hey answer me!"

While we all enjoy being connected to our friends on Facebook, these people are part of the rare sub-species of humans who don't understand the meaning or have a need for alone time.

Delete.

3. The Spammer

Your friend "just invited you to challenge him or her in Bejeweled!". Your friend "is looking for part 8 of the Secret Map of Doom, do you have one?". Your friend is "asking you to join his or her clan in Mafia Wars!".

When we aren't playing games on Facebookl we have a reason. It's either

[a] we're too busy working (not like you, slacker!); or

[b] our bosses are looking over our shoulders (of which at this point in time we're in deep trouble); or

[c] we're simply not interested.

If we're not taking up your offers to join you in your latest Facebook game quest after multiple invitations, it's more than obvious that we're not interested in playing.

And if you keep sending these invitations, they will be considered spam.

Delete.

4. The Bragger

Likely and ex-university classmate, he or she had quite a bit of success and is now living it up. That's good, until said friend wants to tell everyone about his or her achievements.

When you see status messages like "Just got another 6-month bonus! Woot!" or "What car should I buy with this huge commission I just got? I don't have a budget because I've got enough to pay for a house - in cash!", you know your friend had crossed the line.

You know what, Friend? We might reply with a congratulatory message or one of envy the first few times or so, but everyone's going to get tired of your bragging once this goes on for too long. Then you need to know that in actual fact, your Facebook friends don't really care.

Delete.

5. The Overly Emos

We all understand that is' perfectly all right to post one of those "This is the most stressful day of my life!" status messages once in a while.

But if every message this friend posts are of the same nature, you're looking at an overly emo, probably permanently unhappy person.

Life is hard as it is and we're not exactly too very eager to be reminded that it is a drag or that the world is going to end.

Delete.

6. The 25-year-old Teenagers

These are the ones who flood their Facebook pages with every application possible, and fill in their entire profile page with glittery text.

Every other picture uploaded is of them trying on new clothes in some shopping centre dressing room, copying the latest Miley Cyrus style.

While they are certainly quite harmless, gaudy profiles and bimbo-esque updates aren't going to make the best impression of your social circle to others. Heed this warning especially if you have work or business contacts on Facebook.

Delete.

7. The New Parents

They've already uploaded 362 pictures of their newborn and are taking pictures every time the kid cries, coos, sleeps or gets changed - which really means all the time.

Worse, they start posting status updates of what their little tyke is doing every minute of the day, including those activities described above. Then they start using their baby's photo as their profile picture.

Unless you're really enthusiastic about babies or want to engage in a baby status war using your own kid's pictures and status updates, this is someone you can skip.

Most of us aren't interested to know how fantastic your baby is and how unique the kid is - a few updates are okay, but when it's happening all the time, delete.

8. The Health Freak

Most likely a female, she counts every calorie she eats, and bemoans that life is going downhill the moment she couldn't resist temptation and swallowed a single M&M.

She also believes in reading her own heath by studying what she poops, and posts all that information on her Facebook status on a daily basis.

Worse, she keeps sending messages telling everyone that almost everything you eat is bad for your health, and that you'll likely get cancer the moment you touch those Mars Bars.

While we all know that not everything we eat is good for us, we don't exactly need a constant reminder about that, thank you very much. And urgh, keep those poo analysis results to yourself. We don't need to know.

Delete.

9. The No-updater

This friend had been on your Facebook list for more than a year and a half now, and you've never seen him or her update the page more than three or four times during the entire period.

Other than a generic profile picture, or - gasp - none at all, there are only a few other lines of similarly boring bits of information about this friend, like schools or workplace.

He or she never replies to wall posts, and never posts a message either. If you aren't using Facebook, then why are you on Facebook in the first place, Friend?

Delete.

10. The Old Classmate Whom You've Never Spoken To

He or she was your primary school classmate who sits at the other end of the classroom and never spoke more than four sentences to you the entire year.

This friend added you because you were tagged to another friend-of-a-friend's photo. After some initial chatter about a 'reunion' you've never spoken in the last half a year since.

Delete.

Well, just alittle bit of info for ya. Apart from making earrings, watching movies & pseudo philosophy. I' m very much a foodie as well!

At the start of last week, my parents & i took a visit to Royal China at Raffles Hotel for my Dad's birthday celebration.

The doorstep to a chinese diner's delight ...

For SGD$48++, the three of us enjoyed a weekday set lunch meant for four. Filled, satisfied & value for money is an understatement. The meal consisted of a trio of dim sum, a sumptuous soup of the day, fish in a hotpot, greens with wolfberries, a char siew (roast pork) platter, noodles, rounded off with dessert. A meal specially catered, prepared in the right textures & flavours to satisfy any chinese cuisine craving!

Not just your regular Siew Mai, one of their specialties!

That was dessert. Steamed layered cake with salted egg yolk. Believe me, it tastes better than it looks!

The Tim Sum dishes on the ala carte menu, are definitely worth a try as well!

The set lunch menu was different from my first visit. Apparently, it changes from time to time for that tint of suspense & the offerings of variety. Polite staff with efficient service combine with nostalgic background chinese music & grandeur decorations to bring about an ambient & enjoyable dining experience.

Do make prior reservations to avoid disappointment. One thing ensures, this wont be my last visit. Come one, come all ...

Ironman II - A Little Review

Had a reprieve from our respective jobs; took a short trip to the box office to catch the latest Marvel blockbuster, Iron Man II.

In this sequel to the highly popular Ironman, we see Robert Downey Junior reprising his role as Tony Stark. This time, however, he is struggling to manage the pressures of running Stark Industries, the responsibility of being Iron Man, along with the continual tussle to hand over his Ironman suit to the United States Army, at the same time coping with the fact that the palladium keeping him alive is slowly poisoning him. Talk about a guy dying under pressure!

Enter Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko / Whiplash. A Russian speaking, parrot loving, double crossing physicist bent on revenge, and Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer; a charismatic Weapons Manufacturer bent on dismantling the Stark Industry legacy. Rourke sparkles in his creation of a multi dimensional villain, one with the look of a believable highly intellectual physicist juxtaposed with the poise & treachery of a comic book badass. Comic relief is Sam Rockwell, with his continual dramatic behaviour. Sizzling, is Scarlett Johannsson as Natasha Romanoff. If she didn't look great in that Shield Agent suit, she probably astounded us by how she managed to beat up over ten guards without messing up her hair.

Hairspray, anyone?

Overall, the plot is pretty well written and easy to follow. Stark, with his oversized ego can get rather annoying, but he makes up for it, showing greater depth in his character apart from just frivolity & narcissism. Take some time to observe the characters, many of them whose personality by decisions & words unsaid, go beyond face value. If you liked the prequel, you'll like this sequel.

I mean like, who doesn't love guys & girl mixing it up in metal suits with guns & lasers. You'll have to see it for yourself to find out.

Meanwhile, I gotta get back to designing my new suit, I mean earrings ...
